CRG - I Do Borrow Post-Mazda Raceway Report

Friday, May 6, 2016

Coming into the weekend leading the Team and Driver points championships, the CRG – I Do Borrow team arrived for the latest round of the 2016 Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge Series at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with a great deal of momentum.  But at times in a racing season you encounter obstacles that test your metal both as a driver and as a team, and this would turn out to be one of those weekends.

Throughout the course of the weekend the #44 I Do Borrow/A&C Properties Honda Civic Si would encounter electrical issues that would render it difficult to put together a string of good laps to bring the fight to the rest of the Street Tuner (ST) class.  When the car would run consistently for a full lap, it showed strong pace, and the drivers knew the set up was very good, as it had been all season.

True to form the team kept battling throughout each session to solve the issue.  Sarah Cattaneo would be tasked with qualifying the car and starting the race.  Still encountering the electrical gremlins, she would begin the race from the 21st starting position, and quickly began making up spots on the rest of the ST field until she was forced off track by one of the Grand Sport entries.

After recovering from the off track excursion, she would turn the car over to her co-driver Owen Trinkler to do his best to salvage the race and gain as many points as possible to remain in the championship hunt.  Trinkler would have moments during his stint where the car was very fast and able to make up positions, but then would encounter the electrical issue, which would eliminate his ability to have the power necessary to keep moving up through the field.

In the end, he would cross the finish line in 18th position, a spot good enough to remain in the Top-5 in both Drivers and Team points on the season.  Cattaneo dubbed this “The weekend of survival”, and goes on to state “We had an electrical issue that we fought all weekend starting in practice and on through the race. Due to the issues we had during practice, the Qualifying session was really my first time in the car this weekend.  We knew we had to take what we could get this weekend results wise.”

Of the weekend Trinkler states, “Our guys tried everything they could this weekend to solve our electrical issues, I can’t thank them enough for their efforts.  Although the car never ran to its ability all race, it was still really quick handling wise.  We minimized the damage results wise, so we can stay in the fight going forward.  We’ll do a test prior to Watkins Glen to make sure we solved the issue, and we’ll be ready.”

Following the third round of the season Sarah and Owen are currently fourth in the Driver Points standings with CRG-I Do Borrow fifth in the Team standings.  The race can be viewed via tape delayed broadcast on Fox Sports 1 on May 8th, 2016 at 8:00 a.m. EST.
